Assembly Capital recently released radio, an app that lets you create or tune into rooms where you can collaboratively DJ with other users on the network.

Radio turns the algorithm-driven institution that is Youtube into an experience that's more like watching an old TV with just a few channels with your friends.

Developer ~nodmyn-dosrux writes "Radio is the first urbit app with presence built in. Accurate presence data creates a socially charged experience ... Presence gives people reason to engage with each other. Our natural social impulses disincentivize “lurking”, but this doesn’t work when software makes us invisible."

Urbit Developer Week


The big winner of our Hackathon will show off herd in this month's developer call. Herd is a dependency management tool for hoon. With herd, you don't have to include all the libraries you use on your application desk; instead, you get them from other desks on your ship. This talk is a walkthrough of creating a desk with herd, adding new dependencies, and running and distributing your application.

~midsum-salrux is a full-stack hoon developer. In addition to herd, he has written tendiebot (a chatbot that fetches stock and crypto prices), faux (a bridge between urbit groups and discord) and tracks (an upcoming dashboard app).

Join us on September 15th to talk to ~pilwyc-fastec about Communal Computing and the Internet of Things (IoT). ~pilwyc-fastec has been studying how Urbit and Internet of Things (IoT) devices can complement each other securely. Connected devices open up new frontiers of integration and automation, but have tradeoffs in security and control worth considering as users and developers.

~pilwyc-fastec is an IoT hobbyist, smart home enthusiast, Alexa skill builder, and most recently was product manager for the identity platform, biometric recognition machine learning, and voice assistant integration for Facebook’s Portal. He recently published [a blog post on Communal Computing](https://urbit.org/blog/smart-home-of-the-future).

We'll discuss how Urbit and Communal Computing ideas complement each other, and where work remains to be done. The smartest home is one you still control yourself.

~littel-wolfur will be talking about the history and state of %khan, a new thread orchestrator vane in Urbit. He will go over its usage in apps like the discord bot by ~midsum-salrux, how it makes thread interaction much easier, and how future %khan clients will make native noun communication possible. Urbit Foundation Meetup - Kingsnight


This time Uqbar’s ~hodzod-walrus will join Neal Davis to discuss Uqbar’s latest developments in building what will be the first Blockchain on Urbit. ~hodzod-walrus will go into Uqbar’s basic outline and how they will make their plans reality. Why their ZK interpreter, Zock, is the perfect form for smart contract integration on Urbit. How they will execute parallel smart contract on Hoon and the endeavours with uHoon.

~hodzod-walrus is a programmer working on Uqbar. Previously he built Pokur as an Urbit Foundation apprenticeship grant. He’s quickly become a Hoon evangelist and hopes to showcase its strengths in the world of smart contracts.

Urbit Meet-Up Stockholm


Quartus Corp's ~rabsef-bicrym will join Neal Davis to discuss his ongoing endeavours to make useful software on Urbit. ~rabsef will explain three visions Quartus has for Urbit’s use - Urbit as Personal Data Assistant, Urbit as Building a Better Syllogism, and Urbit as STEAM Toy.

~rabsef-bicrym is a long-standing member of the ~dalten Collective. His path to Urbit development is non-traditional, coming from the world of the practice of law prior to working on Urbit. Quartus’s products on Urbit include `%gora` and `%crow`. They’ve also submitted several updates to the main code base including, most recently, an update to the ring signature library.

Meetup: Brisbane Australia


As many of you know, Urbit runs best when hosted, seeing that it's a server and all. The problem of course is that hosting an Urbit ship isn't the easiest of things to do for most people. Hosting Urbit ships in production is actually pretty tough though—doing it right requires wrangling the complexity of traditional "Earth" infrastructure in addition to a strong sense of how Urbit works.

In this call we're joined by Brendan Hay, the lead behind Tlon Hosting, and Lukas Bühler of UrbitHost, in what's sure to be an entertaining and informative conversation. Bren and Lukas have both been the masterminds behind their respective hosting architectures, and were somewhat surprised to learn that they'd independently settled on highly similar architectures.

This will be an unscripted conversation that's sure to span a gamut of topics including, but not limited to: the unique technical challenges of hosting Urbit ships, the upcoming %khan vane, Kubernetes operators, product roadmaps, custodianship of (or plans to do away with) private keys, and probably a ton more.

ETH Gas prices are too high! The growth of Urbit has been greatly hampered this year by the cost of activating planets. Join Philip Monk (`~wicdev-wisryt`) and the entire L2 team as they present the work completed to date to implement Layer 2 naive rollups. Come see a demo of the new Bridge front end, first migrating a star and spawning some planets, then activating a planet, all on L2.

This call will be a great opportunity for galaxy owners to get their questions answered for the upcoming vote on Layer 2 implementation. Jake considers himself a recovering Fintech engineer currently working at Tlon. He is interested in building learning systems and tools in Urbit.

Ted Blackman (~rovnys-ricfer) has worked on Urbit since 2017, mostly on the kernel, with forays into the runtime and userspace. Before Urbit, he worked in sensor fusion, robotics, web development, distributed systems, and data engineering. He has a degree in physics from MIT.

The Urbit community has grown at a rapid clip throughout 2021. There are so many exciting things going on that it's hard to convey them all, even with Developer Calls happening every two weeks. This event will function as a virtual "mini-conference" where we'll give a series of important and exciting announcements, including both formal and informal talks from many members of our community.

Here's a rundown of what we'll be discussing:

## Introduction: State of the Network

Josh Lehman will discuss some of the most important areas of work being undertaken, provide a picture of where Tlon and community efforts are going in the future, and even has a few exciting announcements to make.

Piloting an Urbit ship requires expertise that many lack. To achieve the rich and prosperous ecosystem we've all envisioned requires making that journey easier. In this talk, Hunter Miller introduces a new way for users to join the network with minimal effort.

## Keynote: The Revenge of Teleology

_~13:00 PDT, Justin Murphy_

Teleology—or inquiry into ultimate ends—has been out of fashion since the seventeenth century, when Francis Bacon said that, “like a virgin consecrated to God,” it “produces nothing.” I argue that the digital revolution is inverting Bacon’s claim. Baconian instrumentalism is now suffering from diminishing returns—it is what the youth today call a Boomer Ideology. Rather, the greatest gains are going to individuals and communities with teleological attitudes. This talk will observe some examples and present a model consistent with the observations. Bitcoin inquires after the telos of money, the most winning independent “content creators” inquire after the telos of media, and Urbit inquires after the telos of personal computing.

Building solid networking infrastructure has been a major focus of the Urbit project since its inception. There's a lot going on under the hood
that ensures our servers reliably stay connected. Liam Fitzgerald (~hastuc-dibtux) will be explaining how Urbit is able to deploy changes without breaking the network. Anyone designing userspace applications will be interested in the approach he has designed.

Liam is an Interface Engineer working at Tlon working on the Landscape team. He will be discussing networking userspace applications in depth and going into detail about the new versioning system.

Video chat on Urbit? It's nearly here using the WebRTC protocol. Edward Amsden (`~ritpub-sipsyl`) will be giving us a look at the WebRTC Airlock library that he has developed that handles all the hard parts of WebRTC. This will allow developers to simply call or answer calls by ship or app name. Edward will also be giving us a live text-based demo of WebRTC on urbit. Please join us for an exciting presentation.

Edward is a software developer and the principal of Black River Software LLC. He has several years experience building both backend and IoT software in Haskell, and in particular building IoT control and software deployment infrastructure. He also has academic background in programming language research.

Developer Call: Real-Time Communication on Urbit


Bitcoin is coming to Urbit! With the upcoming release of the Bitcoin Wallet, you will be able to pay Urbit ships directly with BTC.

We’d like to take a moment to show it off, and discuss the future of commerce on Urbit. First, Christian and Josh will demo the wallet, then, our good friend Marty Bent will moderate a panel with Christian, Tim, and Ed. We will have time at the end for questions.

Some exciting work has been going on behind the scenes to provide the foundation for 3rd party software distribution. In this talk Phil (~wicdev-wisryt) and Raghu (~sovmep-ripsum) will discuss the work they've been doing to clay to provide "virtual desks"—an integral part of the infrastructure needed to have safe, generic software distribution.

Raghu is a software engineer at Hudson River Trading who is perhaps best known for his work on ucal, the Urbit calendar application. The work he's doing with Phil on virtual desks is being done through our Scholarships program, in which community developers pair up with Tlon infrastructure engineers to work on infrastructure projects. We'll spend some time at the beginning of the call to introduce Raghu and hear about his experience working on the Urbit kernel.

Developer Call: 3rd Party Software Distribution


Urbit provides a powerful and extensible platform for all kinds of app development. It can serve as a general-purpose datastore, decentralized network, and identity solution for a variety of front-end applications. The client that ships with Urbit, Landscape, provides one example of the kind of applications that can be built on the platform. However, other developers can use the same tools used to create Landscape to power their own interfaces and clients for Urbit.

Tyler Brown Cifu Shuster (~radbur-sivmus) has worked with the Landscape team over the past few months to extract these tools into reusable Javascript packages. In this talk, he will explain how to use them to develop a client for Urbit independent of Landscape. He will cover the basic lifecycle of a client and explain how Javascript interface and state frameworks pair with Urbit's data model.

This talk should enable anyone familiar with modern Javascript development and HTTP grammar to build an application on top of Urbit without writing any back-end code.

Developer Call: JavaScript Apps on Urbit


Landscape was an experiment. Now it’s Tlon's flagship client for the Urbit project: a product, a full-stack application, spread across a variety of Gall agents and libraries, lighting the way forward against the dwindling unknowns in the reality of Urbit userspace development and distribution.

Matilde Park, Landscape team lead, talks about the distinctions between the Landscape product and basic Urbit development, and the significance of building Landscape for Tlon — the role of “high-pressure experiments” in forcing our computer toward something rock-hard, diamond-perfect. With a few examples of ongoing deployments, she also outlines the problems being solved right now and the ones still a touch further out.

Developer Call: Pressure and Protolith


Urbit engineer Philip Monk will be discussing the solution space to scaling Azimuth, the infrastructure for Urbit ID that's built on Ethereum.

Unless you're living under a rock, you know that Ethereum is thoroughly congested and, as a result the cost of working with it is quite high. Most pertinently for Urbit, this means that the cost of bringing new planets onto the network is unacceptably high.

Phil has been doing a ton of research for the past few months on different approaches to scaling Azimuth. In this talk, he'll lay out the what's been explored so far, the relevant considerations for Urbit, and the emerging solutions that are being pursued.

This call will feature a discussion by well-known developer in the Urbit community, ~timluc-miptev. ~timluc will be discussing the work he's been doing to provide access to a Bitcoin full node, which will enable Urbit ships to make Bitcoin payments to other ships. More generally, he'll be discussing the patterns that he's using to manage an Urbit ship's connection to externally-running infrastructure, and how access to that infrastructure can be provided to other Urbit nodes.

This call will feature a discussion by Tlon engineer Mark Staarink, also known as ~palfun-foslup, about writing an HTTP BitTorrent tracker and command line app in 1500 lines of code.
